Los Debutantes * Andrés Waissbluth (2003)

Los Debutantes“Los Debutantes” is a nice film from Chili. The box already gives away a bit too much, but let me just say that the perhaps not unique, but still nice way the film is montaged makes a few wonderings of what’s what in the beginning and a ‘what would the conclusion be’ wondering towards the end. Well done and the beautiful Antonella Ríos frequently in full glory comes as a nice extra. The film is listed as a thriller which is probably the best discription, story wise I keep thinking of “Pulp Fiction” and “Lost Highway”, but worked out differently. Do not read too much about it when you decide to watch it.

Intacto * Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (2001)

IntactoAnother film with the clue on the back of the box. The main characters have a gift that is more fun not to know when you start watching the film. It is a nice finding and makes an original story, but it gives the film away knowing beforehand. The gift results in the most crazy bets which gives this film a thrillerish atmosphere. Not badly done.

The Strangers * Bryan Bertino (2008)

The StrangersAfter a rather lengthy intro telling me that this film is based on true events, a pretty damn pressing thriller unfolds. There is little mystery in this film. Two young people go to a remote house and they get visitors with bad intentions. The rather lengthy intro could add to it, but the film is dark and threatening even when you can tell what will happen. This film is the debut of an American director and I have rarely seen such a dense American film. No flashy story, no special effects, no big stages, just in and around a small summer house. Realistic, there is a much bigger chance that this could happen to you than that you would find yourself in a room with a spoon to find that key behind your eyeball. Quite incredible that somebody is capable of doing things like this too. So, I can only say: great atmosphere, good film.

Dance Of The Dead * Gregg Bishop (2008)

Dance Of The DeadHm, in a very normal DVD rental I picked out a box shouting: “one of the best horror-comedies” and something about a well written film. It could be me, but I see nothing more than a standard teenage zombie horror slasher with some gory humour. A few nice scenes and funny jokes, but a very standard film overall.

RocknRolla * Guy Ritchie (2008)

RocknRollaApparently I have not seen half of the films of Guy Ritchie, but I do know that “RocknRolla” is of the same breed as “Lock Stock And Two Smoking Barrels” and “Snatch”: a flashy crime comedy. “RocknRolla” is very typical for this kind of film. A maffioso-like rapid montaged intro, hip small crooks unknowingly dealing with the big guys, action and a lot of humour. There is nothing new about “RocknRolla”, even the story is almost the same as of “Lock Stock…”. Fortunately Ritchie has mixed the standard ingredients well and “RocknRolla” became an entertaining film.

In The Name Of The King * Uwe Boll (2007)

In The Name Of The KingA fairly standard, but entertaining medieval action, adventure, fantasy film with a bit too many Lord Of The Rings elements. Not boring, but certainly not very original.

Max Payne * John Moore (2008)

Max Payne“Max Payne” is a pretty dark action thriller that starts with great montage to give the background story. The stages and atmosphere are very nice, which is probably because this is supposedly a game put into film. The story is not too original or interesting and there is some symbology taken from Norse mythology, but up until the last half hour “Max Payne” is a pretty convincing film. When the end needs to be wrapped together, the plot gets thinner. Still a nice one to watch when you feel like watching an action movie.

Portal * Geoffrey Schaaf (2008)

PortalAn awfull attempt to make a dark, satanic horror/thriller. The story stinks, the acting is awfull, there is not a shred of credibility or atmosphere and even the fancy camera filters do not work for me. A waste of your time!
